Open the road to the youth!

200 years ago at the Peterloo massacre, when the ruling class felt threatened by a strong working class movement, they sent in the yeomanry. In the recent UK election, they sent in the press. Despite the attacks, however, Corbyn’s leadership inspired and mobilised the youth like never before. 56% of 18-24 year-olds voted Labour. The establishment put all manner of barriers in the way of young people, pulling out all the Read more…

Marxists stronger than ever, prepare for 2020!

The last 4 months have been filled with activity for the Marxist Student Federation. 2019 has seen powerful movements explode around the world and Britain has been no exception to this rule. We strive to organise revolutionary students and educate them in the ideas and practice of Marxism. The year kicked off with our most successful freshers period yet. We were present at 36 universities, and signed up close to 3200 Read more…

Why I fight: we must defend Corbyn, and fight for socialism

It took half a decade of deliberation before I joined the Labour party. Born at the start of the millennium, I’m not quite old enough to remember the Blair years with any clarity – I was two years old on the onset of the Iraq War, and still wearing Velcro shoes when Gordon Brown assumed the mantle of Prime Minister. Like many young people, my political awareness was instead forged under Read more…

Reflections on the UCU strike in Cardiff

There was an electric atmosphere at Cardiff university over the past two weeks as university staff took to the picket lines for the latest round of UCU strikes. Across the ten days of strike action, staff set up picket lines outside their respective department buildings each morning before joining together in a local park for a mass rally that would last until midday. The rallies were consistently well attended by dozens Read more…

UCU strikes – students and workers, unite and fight!

Academic staff organised in the UCU are currently in the middle of strike action over pensions and pay. The strike is due to finish on 4th December, but could escalate in the new year if management at Universities UK (UUK) do not meet the union’s demands. The MSF has been at the picket lines in various universities in the last week, and we publish a few of these reports of this Read more…

Student sets himself alight in France after losing grant – capitalism must go!

A desperate act by a financially insecure student is reflective of Macron’s austerity policies that continue to attack the working class. Anger and frustration is rising as the government fails to deliver on the most basic reforms to help students get by, meanwhile apathy from the representatives of the ruling class demonstrate just how out of touch they are. Last week saw protests erupt across French universities after a student at Read more…

Marxist students prepare to support UCU strike

The Marxist Student Federation is ready to support all workers on strike over this period. Marxist societies up and down the country will be at the picket lines from this morning onward.    The working conditions of our staff are our learning conditions and we should stand side by side with them in this struggle. We will be on the picket lines, supporting our staff and we encourage all of our Read more…

An interview with a Marxist activist in Barcelona

On Monday 11 November I attended a last-minute rally called by the Committees for the Defence of the Republic (CDR) in central Barcelona. This was just a glimpse into the ongoing militant struggle being waged against the reactionary Spanish state, yet it reflected a mood of radicalisation and determination, especially amongst the youth. Despite the various waves of political sentencing, blatant police brutality and savagery on the streets, this has not Read more…

Have the Tories leant on the NUS to stop Corbyn?

As the general election campaign gets underway the choice for students and young workers has never been clearer. On the one hand you have a government led by a party responsible for staggering tuition fees, deaths of thousands from cut public services and in complete denial over the terrible living standards and low wages the youth face in Britain today. On the other hand you have a party built from working Read more…

The poor die because they’re stupid, says ruling class representative

Jacob Rees-Mogg’s recent comments on LBC have sparked outrage. In a discussion about the Grenfell tower tragedy, Rees Mogg said “I think if either one of us [Nick Ferrari] were in a fire, whatever the fire brigade said, we would leave the burning building. It just seems the common-sense thing to do.” Such contempt for the victims of this tragedy is exactly what we should expect from the Tories. Their party Read more…

Students are fighting for a socialist labour government!

The last couple of years has seen a huge leap in political engagement, especially among young people. In particular, we’ve seen hundreds of thousands of school students, demonstrate around the country to demand action on climate change. And after almost a decade of austerity, the general election is coming on 12th December that will give young people the chance to kick the Tories out of government for the first time in Read more…
