Justice for workers – shame on SOAS – la lucha continua!

12 June was the 8th anniversary of the forcible deportation of 9 SOAS workers. This day has since become one of commemoration in the SOAS community, in order to condemn what was a horrific attack on the staff. Yet it was on the anniversary of these events that SOAS management once again proved itself to be interested in nothing other than profit, with complete disrespect for their workers by announcing the planned Read more…

SOAS management offices occupied by J4W campaigners – rally today!

Yesterday, on 12 June, SOAS Justice For Workers campaigners had decided that enough is enough, and bravely decided to take a direct action and occupy the first floor offices of the university management. The action was decided on immediately after Elior, the outsourcing company contracted by SOAS, had issued a letter to its workers announcing the closure of the SOAS refectory and ‘kindly’ letting the workers know that they will be issued Read more…

Youthquake hits Britain

“This can’t be real” ‒ four words on the lips of the political establishment as the exit polls flashed up on television screens across the country. By the end of the night, the projections were confirmed: an ‘unelectable’ socialist had denied Theresa May majority control of the Commons. What went wrong? How did the Tories lose the “unlosable” race? May called this snap general election with a vast advantage in the polls Read more…

Live updates and Marxist analysis after the General Election

Live updates of commentary and analysis from Marxists around the country after yesterday’s General Election: ———— This election result confirms the process that is going on around the world of a growing polarisation. Workers and young people are looking for political leadership and either forming radical mass movements or as in Britain transforming existing parties – the ruling class can not go forward and still have no way out of the crisis Read more…

“Ye are many – they are few” – vote Labour today! Fight for socialism!

Here’s a collection of thoughts and analysis from revolutionary Marxists all over the country: Last night Jeremy Corbyn concluded seven weeks of General Election campaigning with his 90th rally, in front of hundreds of people in Islington – his home constituency. Football-style chants filled the air in the Union Chapel on Highbury Corner before, during and after his speech. And the electric atmosphere extended outside where hundreds more people, unable to get Read more…

The case for abolishing tuition fees: for a socialist Labour government!

The establishment press have accused Jeremy Corbyn of trying to take Britain back to the 1970s. To many students, however, whose parents were able to study with a maintenance grant and no tuition fees, this will sound like a shining endorsement! The Labour manifesto pledge to scrap tuition fees – effectively immediately for all new and current students – and reintroduce maintenance grants is a decisive break from the market-based policies of Read more…

Tower Hamlets rallies against education cuts

“We can’t let them take our future away! We can’t be pawns for their political ideas!” These were the words of a fourteen-year-old girl to a crowd of hundreds of parents, teachers and school students who gathered in Mile End park yesterday afternoon, to rally against education cuts in the London borough of Tower Hamlets. Despite the suggestion by some of the organisers that this was a community event, as opposed to Read more…

Pre-election screenings of I, Daniel Blake

“I am not a client, a customer, nor a service user. I am not a shirker, a scrounger, a beggar nor a thief. I am not a national insurance number…My name is Daniel Blake; I am a man, not a dog. As such, I demand my rights. I demand you treat me with respect. I, Daniel Blake, am a citizen – nothing more, nothing less.” These powerful words by the protagonist of Read more…

Solidarity with Manchester: only socialism can stop this barbarism

Solidarity with Manchester today: this was an act of repulsive barbarism against innocents, many of them children. I was set to see a gig in the Arena myself in under a month’s time – the thought makes me shudder. As with the assassination of Jo Cox, there is a pressure to remain ‘above politics’ in respect for those lost, but this is to do them a grave injustice. NOTHING is above politics, Read more…

Abolish tuition fees! All out for a Corbyn victory! Register to vote today!

The Labour Party under Corbyn’s leadership pledged today that tuition fees would be entirely abolished in time for students starting university in the autumn of 2018. And that, in addition, those who start university in autumn 2017 would have their first year of fees written off, and that there would be no further obligations to pay for the remainder of their education for any student. This is further proof that Corbyn’s manifesto Read more…

Southampton University Conservatives attack nurses

This is a screenshot from the Southampton Conservative Society group chat. This is what our campus’ Tories think about nurses. Nurses currently work in appalling conditions in an NHS that has been underfunded and attacked by the Tory government. The arrogance and ignorance of the comment is that unlike students, nurses often have to care for families of up to 4/5, don’t have cheaper rents from shared housing, don’t get student discounts, Read more…

Southampton students’ union needs to get political

At the start of this month, a senior lecturer at Southampton University shared an article on Facebook about low morale amongst UCL staff. The article blamed the low morale on the university management. In the post that accompanied the shared link the lecturer wrote a quote from the article “UCL is being run for business and not as a university” and said that the name of UCL could be replaced for any Read more…
