In today’s (16 March) budget George Osborne has promised that all schools in England will become independent of local authority control by 2022. This is an extension of the academy system, which has already been introduced in 2,075 out of 3,381 secondary schools and 2,440 of 16,766 primary schools in England. Bramber House is being occupied by Sussex students to protest the treatment of Luqman Onikosi, a Nigerian MA student, by the University and the Home Office. Luqman’s visa to study has been revoked by the Home Office, meaning he is being threatened with deportation. Over 500 students have pledged to join the indefinite rent strike declared last month by 150 students at University College London (UCL), reflecting campus-wide concerns over soaring accommodation costs and students’ dissatisfaction with management’s response. On Saturday 27th February, tens of thousands of trade unionists, youth, and local activists gathered in London for Britain’s largest anti-nuclear demonstration in a generation, organised by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.
