Left students take over at NUS conference

The 2016 National Union of Students (NUS) Conference was the most militant in years, reflecting the waves of radicalisation sweeping the student and youth movement. There were electoral victories for the left, radical motions passed and tense confrontations between the stale bureaucrats who have dominated the NUS leadership for decades and a rebellious grassroots, invigorated by the dramatic events that have shaken British politics into wakefulness. It is now the task Read more…

SOAS, you have run out of excuses

The Justice for Cleaners movement held a militant and determined protest on Monday 18th April at SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) University of London, which was well attended by approximately 200 people. This included unions, student groups, societies, academics and even Guardian journalist Owen Jones, and this was a particularly positive sign given the time in the academic year. The demonstration was summed up by one of the key leaders Read more…

The revolutionary generation

For decades there was one mantra went it came to the youth and politics; they don’t mix. Time and time again the belief of politicians, members of the public and young people themselves was that 21st century politics was an old man’s game. Young people were content at best, apathetic at worst, as the older generation squabbled over the bureaucratic process politics had become. Times have certainly changed. Corbyn, Sanders and the Read more…

NUS Conference 2016: Marxist student live blog

Wednesday, 20:30 – Roundup of the late afternoon This afternoon saw two right wing candidates elected to the remaining vice-presidential positions. The candidate for VP Society and Citizenship, who was backed by the Labour students, gave a particularly uninspiring hustings speech in which he criticised the NUS for debating ideas and disavowed himself from all forms of politics. It was disappointing to see a candidate like this elected and it demonstrates Read more…

Edinburgh school crisis – the dangerous effect of privatisation

Since the Easter holidays 7,000 children have been denied their education due to the discovery that 10 primary, 5 secondary and 2 additional support schools, built on a PFI scheme are unsafe for the children and young people to be in. Not only has this left children and teenagers at home, missing out on their education (including high school students who are sitting their exams in just two weeks) but it has Read more…

With the primary elections for Democratic and Republican presidential candidates well underway, one candidate in particular has been a favoured subject of global news media. Most news sites cover business mogul Donald Trump’s campaign as if he has already won the Republican Party’s nomination for President. Indeed, the results of the GOP primaries suggest an overwhelming likelihood of Trump gaining the nomination. In light of this, it is necessary to discuss precisely Read more…

EU – in or out?

The European Union referendum has generated much debate among the British left. Over the decades of evolution of the EU institutions, the majority opinion among left-wingers has shifted from opposition to support. We must clarify our understanding of the EU and the related issues ahead of this referendum to provide a clear perspective. When Britain voted to remain a member of the European Economic Community in 1975, the trade union movement and Read more…

Marxist Students take part in Paris demonstrations

We arrived in Paris last week, to take part in a movement against the changes to labour legislation. This law, called the ‘El-Khomri’ law (the name of the Minister for Labour) aims to make bad contracts, along the lines of temporary staff or zero-hours contracts, the norm for all new workers. Collective sackings will also be made more easy. We participated in the national day of action on Thursday, March 31. The next day Read more…
