This period in Britain is marked by industrial disputes. From the RMT to the CWU to Unite and Unison, every union finds itself locked in battle. This crisis of capitalism has led the working class to fight on the industrial front. Both questions of winning reforms today and winning the class war in the long run can only be solved with a revolutionary leadership in the trade unions. This is why I fight.
With university budgets squeezed, education bosses are slashing courses and jobs at institution across the country. Workers and students: Unite and Fight!
Unison members in higher education at 22 universities are staging stikes over pay. At the same time, lecturers in the UCU are balloting for action. The scene is set for united struggle by workers and students on campuses across the country.
The Marxist Student Federation has always stood with workers in struggle. We were proud to support UCU when they took strike action. Now members of UNISON are having to prepare to strike against a pathetic pay offer from the university employers.
Young people have been affected deeply by the crisis of capitalism. Education is under threat, living conditions are worsening and, as a result, people are getting more angry. That anger alone is not enough, many people want something to change but feel defeated by the prospect of making that change happen. Having the ideas of Marxism, and an organisation of dedicated revolutionaries backing up action, can allow this feeling to be overcome.
Private tutoring companies have profited from the crisis in Britain’s education system. Tutors, taxpayers, and parents have paid the price for this. The unions must unite and fight to kick the capitalists out of education.
As the crisis of capitalism deepens. Prices rise while quality is cut. Education is no exception to this. Whilst the workers in Universities are facing real wage cuts, students are told they may have to pay more or be replaced by international students who have always been used as cash cows. The only way out of this crisis is a united fightback from students and workers.
A recent student suicide has once again shone a light on the disastrous impact that mounting debts, rents, and insecurity have on young people’s lives and mental health. Only clear socialist policies can tackle this problem at its root.
In the past academic year we witnessed great unrest on university campuses. The University and College Union (UCU) continued their struggle over decent pensions, pay and conditions with a return to strike action for the fourth year in a row.
Last Friday, 200 students walked out of their lessons at Deyes High School near Liverpool, in protest against the bureaucratic mismanagement of the school. This anger and militancy must be channelled into a united fight to bring education under democratic control.
Support staff at Leeds University, organised in Unison, are on strike this week, fighting for decent pay. The Marxist Student Federation, with presence on some 50 university campuses in England, Wales and Scotland, would like to express our solidarity with the National Strike called by CONAIE in Ecuador and our rejection of the repression by the Lasso government, particularly the serious acts of repression that occurred at the University of Cuenca on June 15.
