Vice-Chancellors raking it in while breakfast clubs face closure

Last week it was reported that the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bath lives a life of extreme luxury. She earns £451,000 per year and is the highest paid Vice-Chancellor in the country. She lives for free in a five-bedroom Georgian apartment, provided by the university, where the university pays for her housekeeper who does the washing and ironing. Bath Uni shelled out £8,224 just on the laundry bill, and almost £19,000 Read more…

End inequality! Abolish private schools! Fund education properly!

A Sutton Trust study published last week has shown that 48% of 11-16 year olds in London have had private tuition in addition to their regular schooling. This is the unacceptable reality of inequality in Britain, and especially London today. Pupils with parents rich enough to pay for extra tuition will end up with far more life opportunities than those without. The Sutton Trust wants to tackle this problem by convincing the Read more…

Why I Fight: without revolutionary theory, there can be no revolutionary movement

For as long as I can remember I’ve felt strongly about inequality and injustice, neither of which my parents tried to hide from me, and as a result I take seriously the repercussions of capitalist society and especially of climate change. It’s not enough just to recognise the problem – it’s necessary to act. So, early in my political development, I spent my time solely engaged in anti-capitalist, grassroots activism. Today, I Read more…

Oxford Vice-Chancellor defends her six-figure salary while staff pay is cut

In a recent speech, the Vice Chancellor of Oxford University accused the ‘mendacious media’ and ‘tawdry politicians’ of trying to tarnish the reputation of the higher education sector by pointing out the hypocrisy of her pay rises. Of course, it was a disaster of a speech all round, with the professor also claiming that it ‘wasn’t her job’ to protect students from homophobic harassment– but this was a particular lowlight. It makes Read more…

Abortion is a right: Rees-Mogg is a relic

Tory politician, potential new Tory party leader, and arch-reactionary Jacob Rees-Mogg is opposed to abortion under all circumstances and with no exceptions. It’s mind-blowing that, almost 100 years after the USSR became the first country in the world to fully legalize abortion in 1920, this is still a topic at the forefront of political debate. And it’s not just here in Britain that barbarous relics like Rees-Mogg exist. In January this year, Read more…

Must revolutions be violent?

Marxists are revolutionaries. We want a proletarian revolution in which the working class as a whole rises up and transforms society for the benefit of all. This means removing the bourgeoisie – the billionaire class that oppresses and leeches off the working masses around the world. Does this revolution need to be violent? No. A peaceful transformation of society is entirely possible if the working class as a whole were to use Read more…

Militant mood at pickets in Crayford and Cambridge #McStrike

At 12a.m. this morning, Georgina, a worker in the Newmarket Road McDonald’s in Cambridge, walked out of work to begin a strike. Strike action is taking place today in two workplaces in the UK and is coordinated with international action in the USA, where McDonald’s workers have been fighting for better pay for the last few years. This marks a huge change in the mood of casualised workers in the UK, Read more…

Why I Fight: overwork, sickness and the tragedy of capitalism

This article is part of an international series on why young people have decided to join the fight against capitalism. Last year, on 2 July, I had to make one of the most important decisions of my life. I told the professionals at the NHS to turn off the life support for my mother’s body. My mother moved here in 2012, like millions of Poles looking for a better life, welcomed by the Read more…
