Why you should read Lenin’s Imperialism

Buy your copy now! Socialists are often told that only capitalist competition can develop enterprise and production, embolden initiatives and harness our collective energies for the good of all. Competition is the lifeblood of capitalism, we are told, one which can only thrive under the ‘free’ market. This argument conveniently ignores the transformation of capitalist competition into monopoly domination, a feature that is characteristic of modern-day capitalism. Take it from the Read more…

Students for Corbyn!

A General Election is coming. We need to be ready. We want Corbyn to power on a socialist programme. #MarxistStudents can play a big role in this election. The student vote transformed the 2017 General Election. Students turned Canterbury red where the Tories had the seat for 100 years. We must do this again, in constituencies across the country.  Every Marxist society will be out campaigning for a Labour victory. We need Read more…

Is Jeremy Corbyn a Marxist?

Recently the BBC, surprise surprise, made a slanderous video titled “Marxism: what it means, and is it an insult?”. The video was made in light of the recent verbal attacks against Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell by prominent Conservative politicians calling them Marxists. In the five minute video, “academic experts” give at best a schoolboy’s attempt at describing what Marxism is, with the usual tarnishing of its name by associating it Read more…

MSF statement: General Election now!

Boris Johnson has wormed his way into No 10. He has been voted in by 160,000 of the most right wing reactionary people in the country, the majority of whom are over 55 years of age and believe that Islam is “a threat to the British way of life” and “Trump would be a good British Prime Minister.” In short, Conservative party members who are typically wealthy, racist, and right wing have elected the Read more…

Why I fight: the importance of theory

Like many people today, I first encountered Marxism online. With a growing interest amongst young people in socialism and Marxism, there is equally a growing number of online “Marxist meme” pages, Twitter accounts and Facebook groups. Quickly, social media became my go-to for Marxist theory, history and politics. Although I did some basic reading I used social media as a substitute for more thorough reading and research, often taking what online Read more…

Smash Capitalism! Join the MSF!

A new generation of students are preparing for the new academic year. But what have they got to look forward to? Cuts to further and higher education budgets have left schools and universities struggling to provide decent working conditions for staff and decent learning conditions for students. There’s creeping privatisation across the education sector, and the hidden costs of accommodation and other fees are turning university in particular into the preserve Read more…

How to fight Counter-Revolution – Lenin 1917

“If you want to do more than merely complain about the counter-revolution, if you want to fight it, you must join us in saying: Down with the ten capitalist Ministers!” Only a few days ago, Minister Tsereteli declared in his “historic” speech that there was no counter-revolution. Today the ministerial Rabochaya Gazeta strikes an entirely different note in the article “Dangerous Symptoms”. “There are clear indications that a counter-revolution is afoot .” Thanks for Read more…

To the Working Women – Lenin 1920

Comrades, the elections to the Moscow Soviet show that the Party of the Communists is gaining strength among the working class. It is essential that women workers take a greater part in the elections. The Soviet government was the first and only government in the world to abolish completely all the old, bourgeois, infamous laws which placed women in an inferior position compared with men and which granted privileges to men, Read more…

Revolution festival!

Revolution 2019 is a three-day festival of Marxist ideas, hosted in London by Socialist Appeal, with talks and discussions on current events, history, philosophy, and economics. This year’s event commemorates Britain’s revolutionary history – from the 19th century Chartist movement, to the 1926 general strike, to the political battles taking place at the present time. With the status quo collapsing all around us, these movements provide valuable and inspiring lessons for activists looking to organise, fight, Read more…

Migration, Capitalism and the Border crisis

Photograph (via the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Flickrstream) The past weeks have seen renewed attention to the United States border and the detention of migrants, especially migrant children, in what essentially constitute concentration camps. The focus of public attention has largely been concentrated on the immediate horrors of these camps’ appalling conditions with many migrant children being held in overcrowded facilities and lacking access to basic necessities. Given the inhumanity of  Read more…

Kick fossil fuels and arms off campus!

Universities at Sheffield, Newcastle and Strathclyde have partnered up with the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) in creating the Future Electrical Machines Manufacturing Hub. The aim is to spur an ‘electrification revolution’ in UK manufacturing while creating PhD projects. They will work alongside a long list of ‘industrial partners’ including Dyson, Rolls Royce, McLaren, Airbus, Siemens-Gamesa, GKN Aerospace. It is absurd to think that these companies can kick-start an Read more…

Lecturer sacked for opposing racist Prevent scheme

A lecturer at Sandwell College in the West Midlands has been sacked for writing the words “racist” and “should be illegal” on a poster promoting the government’s so-called counter-terrorism programme, Prevent. The system is absurdly defined as “a community safeguarding programme”. In reality, the decision by the college to remove David Muritu acts as the final nail in the coffin for any illusions of community and safeguarding that Prevent still clung Read more…
