Swansea Marxists & Labour Students support the postal workers!

Last week, it was announced that postal workers had overwhelmingly voted for strike action. 97% voted yes on a 75% turnout. The result has smashed through the Tory anti-trade union laws. This strike has the potential to send shock waves throughout the entire labour movement. Royal Mail management are clearly anxious, trying to assert that “there is no public support” for industrial action. They couldn’t be more wrong – the postal Read more…

MSF rejects jail sentences for Catalan political prisoners

Image: Màrius Montón Nine Catalan political prisoners, who have been held in remand for almost two years, have been given lengthy jail sentences of between 9 and 13 years by the Spanish Supreme Court for sedition and misuse of public funds. And what was their “crime?” The organisation of the Catalan independence referendum on 1 October 2017. This is a scandalous, undemocratic ruling that reveals the rottenness of the Spanish 1978 Read more…

Marxist Society & Labour Students fight for a socialist labour government in Sheffield

With the current political, economic and constitutional crisis gripping the country, young people are increasingly seeking radical youth-led movements to begin to challenge 40 years of Neoliberalism which has left our generation worse off than our parents, saddled with debt and in precarious work all while having to tackle the upcoming threat of the climate crisis. This week Sheffield Marxist Society and Sheffield Labour Students have joined forces to fight together in Read more…

MSF Statement: solidarity with the uprising in Ecuador!

On 1 March, Ecuador’s economy and finance minister, together with the central bank manager, submitted a letter of intent to the IMF requesting $4.2 billion in support via a three-year Extended Fund Facility agreement. The resulting IMF loan agreement structurally undermines labour protections for the most vulnerable workers in Ecuador. On October 2nd, the government of Ecuador announced a series of reforms that aim to ‘improve the resilience and sustainability of Read more…

Postal workers ballot for strike action! Solidarity!

Voting continues for Royal Mail post workers in the industrial action ballot called by the Communication Workers Union (CWU). The result of this critical ballot, under which deputy general secretary Terry Pullinger has told members to “get ready for the fight of your lives”, will be announced on 15 October. The union is mobilising against attempts by Royal Mail management to again undermine pay and conditions (including the workers’ pension scheme) Read more…

A spectre is haunting the Tories

The Tory Party conference this year showed just how bad things now are for the old establishment, with madness in the hall and strong opposition to Toryism and the government outside. On the Sunday, despite the bad weather, thousands turned out in central Manchester to protest outside the conference as it got underway. Called by the People’s Assembly Against Austerity, and supported by the Labour Party, trade unions and countless other Read more…

As general election looms, Marxist students surge

The last few weeks has seen a huge leap in political engagement, especially among young people. Last week hundreds of thousands of people, especially school students, demonstrated around the country to demand action on climate change. And after almost a decade of austerity, the general election is coming that will give young people the chance to kick the Tories out of government for the first time in their conscious political lives. Death of Labour Students: build a real democratic, socialist youth movement

The death of Labour Students is another nail in the coffin of Blairism. At the same time, its end represents a new opportunity. Corbyn’s election as Labour leader has dramatically transformed the party. The left is clearly in ascendency. It is time the party was fully democratised in order to realise the true potential of this change. We need a new Labour Students organisation founded on healthy democratic methods and socialist Read more…

Blairite Labour Students shut down – we need Students for Corbyn!

This week, on Tuesday 17th September, Labour’s National Executive Committee voted to get rid of Labour Students, with an overwhelming two-thirds majority. The motion, put forward by Jon Lansman, the founder and unelected of head Momentum, put into question the continued affiliation of the student organisation to the Labour Party, citing issues over affiliation fees and other party rules. The motion calls for Labour’s general secretary to “urgently” devise a new Read more…

HE ballots for strike action, vote yes!

Dear Higher Education Workers, Last year we saw the most militant strike in UCU’s history. This time the battle is growing wider to encompass better pay for the lowest paid workers, job security, and fairer workloads. We as students and fellow workers encourage a yes vote to strike action this year. Last year employers tried to end guaranteed pension benefits, and instead your final pension would depend on the gambling decisions Read more…

Nottingham bans Marxists, supports anti-abortion group

Last year the Nottingham Marxist Society was bureaucratically blocked from affiliating to the Student Union. This year however, an anti-abortion society has been approved. The Marxists based our society application on getting support and sign-ups from students on campus, who wanted to join the Marxist society. The SU decided to ignore all these students. The anti-abortion group, on the other hand, forced their application through with threats and expensive lawyers. Nottingham Read more…
