Self-care alone can’t solve the student mental health crisis

As we now prepare to enter another national lockdown, mental health will undoubtedly suffer for many. Yet before it even begins, we’ve already seen over one university student death a week so far this semester, as reported by a recent article from The Tab, with all tied to mental health or drug use. The Tory government has pushed students back into the stress of university studies, in a time of social Read more…

Students strike back as universities profit from suffering

Now weeks into the start of the new academic year, and students across the country are suffering in isolation. With minimal support coming from university administrators, student unions and charities are warning of a mental health crisis amongst quarantined students. “There was a mental health crisis across universities prior to the pandemic,” stated Sara Khan, NUS vice president for liberation and equality. “The pandemic has only exacerbated these issues.” Earlier this month, one Read more…

Tories let working class kids starve

Reputation in tatters At the end of 2019, the Conservative party emerged victorious from the general election. For the first time in years, the Tories held a dominant majority in parliament and were poised, under the leadership of Boris Johnson, to lead the country unchallenged once again. 2020, however, had other plans.  The atrocious handling of the Covid-19 pandemic; the failed negotiations with the EU and a succession of scandals involving Johnson’s Read more…

The Marxists Are Back!

The Marxist Student Federation has come back in force for this academic year. Although we have to shift our usual pattern, the current crisis has opened up some of the most radical attitudes from young people that we have ever seen. Students are suffering under the system, and the Marxist Student Federation is, as always, fighting alongside those students! As well as being out on protests and rallies with students, Read more…

International solidarity with the Haitian revolution: down with the injustice of the Moïse regime!

We ask worker and student activists and organisations around the world to show their solidarity with the struggle in Haiti by sharing this statement, taking pictures and making statements of their own on social media using the hashtags #SolidaritéAvecLaLutteEnHaïti and #ABasLeRégimeMoïse. To add the name of your organisation to the statement please contact webmaster@marxist.com. The regime of Jovenel Moïse in Haiti is completely illegitimate and corrupt. With parliament dissolved, Moïse rules Read more…

Why we need revolutionary theory

2020 will go down in the history books as a turning point. The Tories have played dice with our lives and livelihoods. Boris Johnson has presided over nothing short of catastrophe as a result of confusion, callousness and incompetence.  We are all living in a tinderbox. The fault does not lie with not this or that politician or party alone, but the crooked capitalist system that inescapably prioritises profit before our Read more…

Fight Racism with Socialism! (200 students ready to fight)

(One of 10 Zoom screens!) Last night (October 7th) over 200 people joined the Marxist Student Federation, over Zoom, to discuss Marxism and Black Liberation. Radical students from across the country, as well as around the world (Sweden, China and India, to name a few) met with the Marxist Student Federation to talk about a topic which has been forced into public consciousness in recent months.  The struggle to end racism and Read more…

How British capitalism grew rich through slavery

The toppling of the statue of slave trader Edward Colston in Bristol on 11 June has brought to attention Britain’s involvement in the Atlantic slave trade. Although officially abolished in Britain in 1807, this horrific trade in human beings was central to the rise of capitalism and the rise of Britain as a world power in particular. Slavery has existed throughout the history of class society in various places. But it Read more…

Fight parasitic landlords with a rent strike!

Students up and down the country are furious with their current living conditions. Thousands of students have been trapped in their accommodation halls, with minimal help or guidance from their universities on what will happen next. Meanwhile university management, and the Tories, are continuing to blame young people and students for the rise in COVID cases.  We have been brought to university, by management and the government, under false pretenses. Why Read more…

Slavery and the Beginnings of Black Struggle

Black Africans first arrived in the lands that would later become the original Thirteen States around 1619, as indentured servants, although the Spanish had brought Black slaves with them to what would later become New Mexico and Arizona as early as 1539. At that time, they were in a similar position to the many poor English people who, in exchange for passage to America, had sold several years of their labour Read more…

Tory bans won’t stop us: anti-capitalism is the only way forward

Last week the Department of Education (DfE) released their new guidance for how to ‘Plan your Relationships, Sex and Health Curriculum’. In the report, under the sections ‘Using External Agencies’ and ‘Choosing Resources’ they laid out their plans to stop materials from organisations with “extreme” political stances being used in schools. The first on the list of examples given is “a publicly stated desire to abolish or overthrow democracy, capitalism, or to Read more…

Students in lockdown: Marketisation and profit to blame

Students across the UK have been flooding into universities in recent weeks for the start of the new academic year. Armed with face masks and empty promises of safety from university administrators, these young people have embarked on an unusual journey into higher education (HE) in the age of COVID. Prior to students’ arrival, lecturers and staff in the University and College Union (UCU) had raised concerns about the lack of clear guidance and leadership from Read more…
