A new generation of students are preparing for the new academic year. Coronavirus has transformed millions of lives across the world and people are angry. Young people have faced a summer of uncertainty, and are now preparing to start university. But what have they got to look forward to? Cuts to further and higher education budgets have left schools and universities struggling to provide decent working conditions for staff or decent learning conditions for students. There’s creeping privatisation across the education sector, and the hidden costs of accommodation and other fees are turning university in particular into the preserve of only those who can afford it. The Marxist Student Federation in Britain aims to build an organisation of students educated in the ideas of Marxism. We want to take Marxist ideas into the labour movement, and fight for an international socialist revolution.

Lenin’s Last Struggle

In the last active period of his life, Lenin was chiefly absorbed by the problems of the Soviet economy under the New Economic Policy. In 1921, under the pressure of the millions of peasant small proprietors, the workers’ state had been forced to retreat from the path of Socialist planning and industrialisation, in order to

Lenin on the National Question

The existence of nations, nation states, and national consciousness, is a characteristic feature of the capitalist epoch. Before the advent of capitalism, there was no genuine national consciousness in the modern sense. Feudal society was dominated by particularism, where peoples identified themselves as members of villages, towns, localities, regions, and principalities. It took the
