Beyond political neutrality: the fight for revolution in Brazil

The article below is a translation of an article that originally appeared on the website of the Brazilian Marxists – Esquerda Marxista It’s already 2017. But June 2013 was a landmark in the debates about what the involvement of a young person in politics should be. When we say ‘young person’, we mean it in a general sense, not just the revolutionary youth already determined to overthrow the system and create new Read more…

Students fighting for socialist revolution in Multan, Pakistan

Capitalism is squeezing international students in the UK

£24,000. This is how much you may be required to pay for one year of university education in the UK if you’re international student. Exorbitant tuition fees are a symptom of what has been done to universities over the past 30 years. Institutions of higher education, once considered to be sacrosanct temples of knowledge, gradually have become more and more commercialised. Universities have become nothing more than businesses, led by boards of Read more…

Zero tolerance for zero hours

As is now common for so many, after spending three years at university and gaining a debt of almost £40,000, the only work I have been able to find is in a local bar on a zero-hours contract. Marx said that capitalist competition is three-sided. He used the example of a battle between two armies, buyers and sellers, each of whom also fight amongst themselves. Whichever ‘army’ fights least amongst themselves will Read more…

Grunwick: class unity and the fight for union rights

The Grunwick strike exhibition beautifully marks the 40th anniversary of when Jayaben Desai, a middle-aged Gujarati woman who was a migrant from Tanzania, led a walk out from the Grunwick Film Processing Laboratory in Willesden in 1976. As you enter the exhibition, you are welcomed with sheets hanging down from the ceiling with images of the strikers standing-off against six-foot policemen. The walls are littered with revolutionary art calling for solidarity amongst Read more…

Elections and boycotts at Leeds University Union

The morning of February 17th 2017 saw two headlines concerning the Leeds University Union executive (LUU exec) in the local student press. The first bemoaned the year on year decline in turnout for the elections that see students run for sabbatical positions as union officers in the LUU exec (http://www.thegryphon.co.uk/2017/02/17/leadership-race-turnout-decreases/). This comes at the end of an election week where the Union has offered the chance to win prizes – including £50 Read more…

Lenin: his youth and his formation

As part of our preparation for the In Defence of Lenin conference, we republish this article by Ted Sprague from 2010. Much has been said about the exploits of Lenin as the leader of Bolshevik and the October Revolution. His accomplishment as an individual is of no equal in the history of human civilization. There is almost no need to repeat what has been said about his life as a Marxist by Read more…

What did we learn from last term’s occupation at Warwick?

In early December last year at Warwick University, a group of student activists cut through the winter lethargy with an occupation of the Slate, a newly-built £5.3m conference building. Organised by the student activist group Warwick for Free Education, the occupation pushed for three demands to be met by the university’s management. The first demand was that Warwick University opt out of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), the Conservative government’s most Read more…
