Warwick Marxists: our response to false accusations of antisemitism

In the recent period the ruling class in Britain have weaponised anti-Semitism allegations to smear the Corbyn-led Labour Party as “institutionally antisemitic”. Despite less than 0.1% of Labour Party members being the subject of complaints about antisemitism that were upheld, Labour has been painted hysterically as an “existential threat” to Jewish life in the UK. In fact this has turned into a full-blown witch hunt against anyone who opposes capitalism. As Read more…

Capitalism vs Socialism: Newcastle Marxist society debate

At Newcastle University the Marxist Society is the most active group on the left and is fast becoming the reference point for students. This has been achieved by hosting weekly theoretical discussions as well as intervening in demonstrations and labour movement events locally, and was further bolstered by a recent debate between the Marxist and Conservative Societies, hosted by NUSU’s Debating Society. Despite the prospect of looming deadlines, around 35 students Read more…

How the Marxists are voting on reform proposals at NUS Conference 2019

This year, the National Union of Students (NUS) is meeting during a landmark moment in its history. The main issue at hand is the bankruptcy facing the union, which the leadership is trying to avoid through vicious cuts to what little democracy remains in this organisation. 50% of its budget is to be slashed. This involves removing the six liberation officers, effectively reducing the NUS to a think-tank/NGO style organisation. First Read more…

Why NUS Conference 2019 must fight for free education funded through expropriation!

It is generally accepted that the more educated a population is, the more society benefits, but universities, businesses and the government continually raise barriers for those looking to go into higher education. This is because, instead of being seen as a way to educate and better the lives of everyone in society, universities and colleges are now another revenue stream. Therefore, any support for those who need it whilst studying was Read more…

109 staff members at risk of losing their jobs at SOAS: students and workers unite!

SOAS is currently undergoing an intense re-structuring. With a £7.1m gap in the budget, the dire financial crisis at SOAS is no secret. According to a report commissioned by UNISON and UCU Execs, the school is facing “an existential crisis”. Throughout the entire restructuring process, higher management have isolated themselves. Management claim they worked closely alongside unions when working out the process. We are infuriated by these blatant lies when our Read more…

Outsourced workers’ bid rejected – take the struggle to the streets!

This week, London’s High Court dismissed the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB)’s bid for outsourced workers to negotiate directly with the third parties they work for. The bid was on behalf of roughly 75 workers who are employed by the security company Cordant, and carry out work for the University of London. Though these workers’ nominal employer is Cordant, it is plain as day that the university is also Read more…

Why NUS Conference 2019 must fight to end precarious work!

Precarious work is a great danger to both students and workers alike. For students, extortionate rent, expensive university textbooks, and funds for necessities such as food and household essentials are becoming more expensive year on year. These conditions are forcing more and more students to pick up part time, precarious employment just to make ends meet. A study in 2015 found that 77% of students worked part time to cover the Read more…

Student Unions fail to submit Marxist motions to NUS Conference 2019

In the months running up to this year’s National Union of Students (NUS) Conference, I submitted a motion to the Leeds University Union which spoke out against the desperation and poor working conditions that are caused by precarious employment. The motion was not only a firm indictment of precarious work, but it also drew attention to how its upsurge in recent years is a natural product of capitalist crisis. Consequently, the Read more…

Left-wing students barred from entry at King’s during Queen’s visit

In a typical display of extravagancy by the bosses at King’s College London, the Queen and the Duchess of Cambridge were invited to the university last week to formally open their new space at Bush House, on the Strand. As well as a tour of the departments, KCL management organised a display of various research projects for the Royal Family including ‘a tentacle like robot for endoscopic surgery.’ The Queen (herself an Read more…

Grow the Goldsmiths occupation: all students and workers on campus against racism and repression!

The occupation at Goldsmiths has entered its 11th day.  On 12th March, students occupied Deptford Town Hall in protest at the university’s handling of continued racist incidents on campus. Throughout the occupation, what has remained clear is that management doesn’t care about students – especially students of colour. Goldsmiths often attempts to present itself as a ‘revolutionary’ university founded on radical ideas, but the role of university management across the entire Read more…

Which way forward for the Climate Strike?

The #YouthStrike4Climate is a global movement with radical implications. The strikes and demos have been militant, largely spontaneous and massive in size. On 15th March 1.4 million students went on strike in 129 countries. But the movement has to begin thinking beyond these latest strikes if its aims are to be achieved. The challenge of tackling climate change is immense. And its importance is essential. But this will not be achieved without Read more…

Goldsmiths students in occupation against racism and exploitation!

A number of students from the ‘Goldsmiths Anti-Racist Action’ campaign have occupied the Deptford Town Hall campus building since 12 March in protest at the pitiful response from university management and the student union leadership at the racist abuse of a candidate in the recent student officer election. Hamna Imran had her posters ripped apart, with racist graffiti smeared across them. Senior management at Goldsmiths have not taken any action since, and Read more…
