The Marxist Student Federation, representing students from over 50 universities and colleges across Britain, stands in full solidarity with the mass movement taking place in Peru.
On 9 January another massacre took place where 18 people were killed, including a 16-year-old student and a junior doctor who was helping the victims. This brings the death toll to 49 in more than a month of unrest after the coup against president Castillo on 7 December.
The new illegitimate government of Dina Boluarte has used brutal police and army repression to put down protests. Workers and peasants have resisted the coup with mass demonstrations, road blockades, national and regional general strikes and the formation of committees of struggle across the country in a movement that has its epicentre in the poorer, more indigenous southern departments.
Castillo’s campaign, under the slogan “never again poor people in a rich country”, captured the imagination of millions of workers and peasants, particularly in the poorer regions of the country, where the proportion of indigenous quechua and aymara speakers is also higher.
The expectation was that after decades of extreme liberal capitalist policies in favour of the interests of the big mining multinationals, their power and multi-billion profits were going to be rebalanced in favour of the majority of Peruvians.
The demands of the movement are clear: Freedom for Castillo, the closing down of the coup-plotting corrupt congress, ousting of murderous “president” Boluarte, new elections and a constituent assembly.
These are basic democratic demands against the coup. But the workers and peasants already understand that new elections, in and of themselves, would not solve the problem. The whole of the political system is rotten to the core and skewed towards the interests of the ruling class. Only by putting the wealth of the country in the hands of the working people can the slogan “never again poor people in a rich country” be carried out into practice.
It is the duty of the international labour movement to organise solidarity with the heroic resistance of the Peruvian workers and peasants which is an inspiration to us all.

Mensaje de solidaridad de la Federación de Estudiantes Marxistas británica con las masas en lucha en Perú
La Federación de Estudiantes Marxistas, que representa a estudiantes de más de 50 universidades e institutos de toda Gran Bretaña, se solidariza plenamente con el movimiento de masas que está teniendo lugar en Perú.
El 9 de enero se produjo otra masacre en la que murieron 18 personas, entre ellas un estudiante de 16 años y un médico residente que estaba ayudando a las víctimas. Ya son 49 los muertos en más de un mes de protestas tras el golpe de Estado del 7 de diciembre contra el presidente Castillo.
El nuevo gobierno ilegítimo de Dina Boluarte ha recurrido a una brutal represión policial y militar para sofocar las protestas. Obreros y campesinos han resistido al golpe con manifestaciones masivas, bloqueos de carreteras, huelgas generales nacionales y regionales y la formación de comités de lucha en todo el país, en un movimiento que tiene su epicentro en los departamentos más pobres e indígenas del sur.
La campaña de Castillo, bajo el lema “nunca más pobres en un país rico”, cautivó a millones de trabajadores y campesinos, sobre todo en las regiones más pobres del país, donde también es mayor la proporción de indígenas quechua y aymara hablantes.
La expectativa era que, tras décadas de políticas capitalistas liberales extremas en favor de los intereses de las grandes multinacionales mineras, su poder y sus multimillonarios beneficios iban a reequilibrarse en favor de la mayoría de los peruanos.
Las reivindicaciones del movimiento son claras: libertad para Castillo, cierre del congreso golpista y corrupto, destitución del “presidente” asesino Boluarte, nuevas elecciones y asamblea constituyente.
Estas son demandas democráticas básicas contra el golpe. Pero los obreros y campesinos ya comprenden que unas nuevas elecciones, por sí solas, no resolverían el problema. Todo el sistema político está podrido hasta la médula y sesgado a favor de los intereses de la clase dominante. Sólo poniendo la riqueza del país en manos de los trabajadores podrá llevarse a la práctica la consigna “nunca más pobres en un país rico”.
Es deber del movimiento obrero internacional organizar la solidaridad con la heroica resistencia de los obreros y campesinos peruanos que es una inspiración para todos nosotros.
