The Marxist Youth of Venezuela, the youth wing of Class Struggle, expresses its support for the students of the London School of Economics (LSE) who on 18 March bravely occupied the main meeting room of the university. We offer our solidarity and revolutionary greetings to your movement: “Occupy LSE – Free University of London” and to the Marxist Student Federation.

In Venezuela we recognise your inspirational struggle for a university that is open and democratic, with values of justice and equality. Is is the same struggle that the Venezuelan students have been engaged in for years, together with the staff and the most politically aware academics. It is also the struggle of the Chilean students for free and good quality education, and the struggle of the Mexican students in defence of their right to freedom and diversity of thought. These are symptoms that the whole world is changing, that the top-down model of academia and the marketisation of universities is coming to an end.

However, the neo-liberal policies that they are trying to impose upon us in universities are not isolated from the rest of society, they are a response to the generalised necessity of privatisation under capitalism. This economic model has failed and, as a result of its current organic crisis, it is trying to implement austerity measures against the working class in order to maintain its privileges.

Today our task is not easy, the reactionaries who have taken over our educational institutions will not surrender them willingly. It will be necessary to fight them all the way, and only by strengthening our unity with the working class will we win.

Fight the neo-liberal attacks, organise for our rights!

For free and open universities, students of the world unite!
