The resolution below was recently passed in the UCU branch of QMU. It took a bit of toing and froing between committee members but it struck quite a chord not only with shop stewards but also rank and file members.
Its particularly relevant with UCU being a union for a trade dealing specifically with students and its sister union in Mexico being on strike on Monday 1st Dec. Most universities will have a UCU branch so it’ll be possible for Marxist students to contact them and ask them if they want to support it, refer to the QMU branch in Edinburgh which is already supporting it.

On the 26th September in Iguala in the state of Guerrero, Mexico Local police shot dead six people after launching a completely unprovoked attack on students from the Raúl Isidro Burgos Rural Teacher Training College of nearby Ayotzinapa. As part of the same attack, that day in Iguala the authorities detained 43 students from the same school. These 43 students remain “disappeared”. Despite the discovery of several mass graves in the area and horrific unconfirmed reports that the detained students were burned to death, there has as yet been no definite news of the 43 missing young people. Anger and opposition to this has expressed itself in a multitude of ways including a planned General Strike on the 1st of December. This General strike will include involvement from UCU’s sister union in “Education International” STUNAM. This branch supports, within UCU policy, the following
- We show full solidarity with STUNAM in the upcoming General Strike
- We demand the British state break off all ties to the Mexican state until this the criminals have been brought to justice
- We demand the safe return of the 43 students
- We commit to raising awareness of atrocity throughout the British labour movement and call for wider solidarity
- We commit to building solidarity links with the democratic wing of the of Mexican education trade unions – SITUAM, STUNAM and CNTE
- We will support existing solidarity initiatives
- We will make a donation of £50 from the UCU QMU branch fund to local solidarity group to aid in campaigning for solidarity and awareness in the upcoming strike and further relevant action
- we will seek to bring similar solidarity motions to UCU Scotland and UCU UK congresses

El 26 de septiembre en Iguala, estado de Guerrero, México, la policía local disparo y dio muerte a 6 personas luego de lanzar un ataque sin mediar provocación sobre los estudiantes de la Escuela Normal Rural Raúl Isidro Burgos en la localidad de Ayotzinapa. Como parte del mismo ataque, ese día en Iguala las autoridades detuvieron a 43 estudiantes de la misma Escuela. Estos 43 estudiantes están hasta el día de hoy desaparecidos. Pese al descubrimiento de una serie de fosas masivas en el área, y reportes no confirmados de que los estudiantes detenidos fueron quemados vivos, no ha habido noticias confirmadas del paradero de los 43 jóvenes. La rabia y la oposición a este tipo de prácticas se ha expresado de múltiples maneras, incluyendo la planificación de una huelga general para el 1ero. de Diciembre. Esta huelga general incluiría la participación del sindicato hermano de UCU en la Internacional de Educación, STUNAM. Esta sección de UCU apoya, siguiendo los principios de UCU, las siguientes medidas:
- Solidarizamos completamente con STUNAM en la huelga general que se avecina.
- Exigimos que el estado británico rompa toda relación con el estado mexicano hasta que los criminales sean llevados ante la justicia.
- Exigimos que los 43 estudiantes sean liberados sanos y salvos.
- Nos comprometemos a crear conciencia sobre la atrocidad de los hechos ocurridos en México en el movimiento obrero del Reino Unido e instigar una solidaridad más amplia.
- Nos comprometemos a construir vínculos de solidaridad con la sección democrática de los sindicatos mexicanos en el área de la educación: SITUAM, STUNAM y CNTE.
- Apoyaremos todas las iniciativas de solidaridad existentes.
- En nombre de la sección de Queen Margaret University del sindicato UCU, donaremos £50 destinados a financiar un grupo local para que genere conciencia y promueva la solidaridad con la huelga que viene y cualquier acción ulterior relevante.
- Propondremos mociones de solidaridad similares a ésta en los congresos de UCU en Escocia y el Reino Unido.
