Like Lambs to Slaughter

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought British capitalism to its knees. With unemployment soaring and the economy spiralling into the deepest recession ever recorded, Boris Johnson is desperate to restart the machinery of exploitation. To this end, the British ruling class and their ministers are above nothing and are fully prepared to put school students and their families in huge danger. From the very beginning the callous disregard of the conservative government for the people Read more…

School students meet and agree to fight back!

On the evening of September 10th, young people from across the country gathered to discuss the inequality in education that currently exists. This came off the back of the A-Level debacle which happened in mid August.  In this meeting, students and teachers discussed the massive cuts which have been made to schools over the last decade, and how this has affected the futures of students. Natasha, a teacher and member of the NEU, discussed Read more…

The Tories are ‘killing your gran’, not you. Fight back!

Only a few months have passed since the farcical decision that Muslim families would not be allowed to visit their families, in an announcement coming just two hours before the start of Eid celebrations. Then came Tory MP Craig Whittaker’s shameful interview where he claims that “it is the BAME communities that are not taking this (COVID-19) seriously enough” – which, needless to say, is wildly inaccurate. Desperate to find another scapegoat, the Tories’ Read more…

Sheffield school students forced to re-isolate: Another failure!

Today, a group of school students in a Sheffield school have been forced back into isolation after two of their classmates tested positive for COVID19. This has come after a campaign from the teacher’s union, NEU, claiming that there were not enough safety measures in place to stop COVID19 spreading throughout schools.  Less than one week into students returning to schools, and critics of the government’s plan have already been proven correct. This comes Read more…

UK Universities are ‘Sleepwalking into Disaster’

This month, hundreds of thousands of students are expected to head to universities across the UK. However, the Universities and Colleges Union (UCU) recently warned that this could cause a “public health crisis”, adding that we are weeks away from “sleepwalking into disaster”.  Under the current plans – which vary between institutions – universities will be combining face-to-face and online teaching. Whilst some institutions, including Cambridge, have announced that all teaching for the academic Read more…

As schools reopen, we must put teachers in control!

Schools in England are reopening today. The mood amongst teachers, students, and parents is one of unease and anxiety. Rather than opening in the knowledge that adequate safety measures are in place to protect schools and communities, many are expecting school closures in the coming weeks, as the ‘R-rate’ of infection rises. This confused and chaotic approach is in keeping with a Tory government that has prioritised the economy and big business over workers’ Read more…

Loughborough University accepts Boris Johnson! – Fight back!

By Deep Sohelia   With schools in Leicestershire opening a week before the rest of the country, the Prime Minister visited the East Midlands in what can only be described as a glaringly transparent PR attempt in an attempt to boost his flagging support as schools prepare to open for the autumn term. Unfortunately, the sabbatical officers at Loughborough Students’ Union have been all too willing to facilitate this charade, as if they have forgotten Read more…

The Marxist Student Federation is creating a red scare!

Martha Davenport – Manchester Marxist Society On Thursday 13th August, students across the country received their highly anticipated A-level results which, much like the exam grading debacle in Scotland, provoked a huge backlash among students, teachers, and parents. It was reported that almost 40% of grades had been downgraded for students in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, with a third of college principals reporting results dramatically lower than their previous exam performance. However, these Read more…

Fast Fashion: A Marxist analysis

The events of 2020 have begun to expose processes previously hidden to most of us. Many are now questioning the status quo. We are being forced to consider how the things we buy are produced: the unsafe working conditions and the environmental destruction which underpin the production of cheap commodities under capitalism. Attractive models, graphics and highly-polished advertising campaigns have long hidden the true horror of fast fashion and the reality of capitalist production: Read more…

Britain isn’t exempt from racist policing

It’s easy to look at the international protests sparked by the extrajudicial police killing of George Floyd and think that the issue of racist police brutality is something particularly egregious in the USA, while believing that in the UK there may be instances of racism in the police but they are isolated or so rare as to be unimportant. When Sir Keir Starmer said in an interview that “… the Black Lives Matter movement, Read more…

Capitalism is racist: Black Lives Matter

Black lives matter has been an international phenomenon. Sparked by the gruesome killing of George Floyd, hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets all across the world to protest against police brutality and racism. In normal times, this would be a feat in itself. The fact that the movement has been so global, during the coronavirus pandemic is a testament to the power behind the movement.  It should come as no surprise Read more…

‘Rhodes you’re next’ – Black Lives Matter in Oxford

On 9th June, over a thousand people gathered outside Oxford University’s Oriel College to demand the removal of the Rhodes statue, in a revival of the Rhodes Must Fall campaign in Oxford. Cecil Rhodes was a British imperialist. He has been described as the ‘architect of apartheid’ in South Africa due to his leading role in the colonial regime, in particular through altering land ownership and voting laws to displace and disenfranchise black people.
