The first Commonwealth ‘subjects’ arrived in Britain on the Empire Windrush in 1948 from the Caribbean. Although on paper they came as citizens, the real reason for their arrival was a shortage of labour in the war-torn colonial metropole.
One century ago, on 31 May and 1 June 1921, a so-called “race riot” erupted in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Despite a brave attempt by black residents of Tulsa to fight the pogromists, an estimated 300 black people were murdered in those events. The true history of these events has been airbrushed to this day. They represent the horrific fruit of centuries of divide and rule by the American ruling class.
Tens of thousands of Americans are actively looking for ideas, theory, and organisation. They are thirsty for internationalism and a revolutionary optimism grounded in scientific political perspectives. The example of every revolution in history shows that even relatively small numbers of dedicated revolutionaries can have a decisive impact on events under the right circumstances.
This is not a case of a rogue headmaster, this is clearly another neat example of hostility towards people fighting against oppression and exploitation. All rights have been won in struggle, the very struggle which is being clamped down on. This is not a choice anymore, we all must fight back against the decrepit system. Women will never be viewed as equals within a society built upon inequality and injustice. Neither women nor men will ever have control over their lives and bodies within an economy based on exploitation, profit, and competition, and commodification. And we will never rid the world of misogyny, as long as the capitalist class are in control, using sexism and bigotry to divide the working class.
On Wednesday 31 March, hundreds of students at Pimlico Academy held a sit-down protest on school grounds. Whilst the event has been presented as a result of a change in uniform policy, a closer look shows a deeper rooted political battle taking place at the school, of which this protest is the culmination.
But rather than putting the issue of racism to bed, this report will no doubt provoke a backlash. If anything, the establishment’s denial of institutional racism will only vindicate and embolden those who have come out onto the streets to protest against racism and oppression over the last year. After all, in effect, this report is a declaration of war on the Black Lives Matter movement.
